The Benton Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council consists of 10th thru 12th graders. For the school year of 2015-2016, the council has thirty-eight members. The council is also open to those who live in the city limits, not just Benton High. So far this term, these individuals have completed over 1,000 hours of community service for a variety of organizations. The president for this term is MiKayla Nash, vice president being Becky Rand. Other officers include the recording secretary, McKayla Stafford; senior representative, Anastasia Mills; junior representative, Jessica Alvarado; sophomore representative, Jackie Sherrell; communications officer, Catherine Nolte; historians, Emma Carter and Haven Betts. These members of the council have a profound mission statement that states: WE THE MAYOR’S YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL are honorable, trustworthy, ambassadors representing the CITY of BENTON in an enthusiastic and respectful way. WE ARE THE ROLE MODELS who volunteer with upbeat attitudes and who have a drive to serve the common good of the community. WE ARE LEADERS who eagerly involved ourselves in community activities, always striving to make Benton a more beautiful place. WE ARE A VOICE for the youths of this city, upholding the opinions of our peers. WE ARE THE MAYOR’S YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL.
I just recently finished "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak. I had no idea what this novel was going to be about going into it; all I knew was that our 10th grade English class study it. Right off the bat I noticed that our narrator was not your average Joe. The narrator is death. When I realized this I said to myself, "Oh this is going to be good." The novel is all about the Holocaust and it is shown from a German point of view. Leisel Meminger's mother gives her away to a foster German family. On the trip to this new family, Leisel's brother dies. So right from the start death is there. I'm not going to give you a synopsis of it, because I think you should read it for yourself. Just know that a German family hides a Jew in their basement for a while, and death is around every corner. That last line of the novel really got me though..."I am haunted by humans."
