Lily walked into her house, slamming the door behind her. He wasn’t there, but she knew he was not long ago. Lily walked into the kitchen and froze. There, on the counter sat a single lily in a small vase with a card. She knew what the card said. It said the same thing every time.
Lily thought about last night. Austin had thrown her around just like he did every time he had been drinking. Last night had been especially awful though. He had thrown a ceramic dinner plate at her. Lily stared at the lone lily, touched her left temple, and winced. The cut was going to heal. They always did. After all, Austin was right. She needed to quit nagging him. Maybe one day she would learn to keep her mouth shut. Better yet, maybe one day she would get the courage to leave his drunken self. She would find a real man.
Lily walked over to the counter and picked up the card.
“One sweet lily for my one and only sweet Lily,” it read.
She threw the card and flower in the trash. She never even liked lilies to begin with. Lily poured herself a glass of water and went upstairs to pack up all of Austin’s things. He was about to be out of this house and out of her life.
I just recently finished "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak. I had no idea what this novel was going to be about going into it; all I knew was that our 10th grade English class study it. Right off the bat I noticed that our narrator was not your average Joe. The narrator is death. When I realized this I said to myself, "Oh this is going to be good." The novel is all about the Holocaust and it is shown from a German point of view. Leisel Meminger's mother gives her away to a foster German family. On the trip to this new family, Leisel's brother dies. So right from the start death is there. I'm not going to give you a synopsis of it, because I think you should read it for yourself. Just know that a German family hides a Jew in their basement for a while, and death is around every corner. That last line of the novel really got me though..."I am haunted by humans."
