The next morning, Jenna felt extremely nauseous. Just for laughs and giggles, she decided to take a pregnancy test. After she hit thirty, her period wasn’t very consistent so she was never sure what was going on. Her heart stopped as she sat there on the toilet staring at the hot pink plus sign on the pregnancy test. Her eyes began to well up with tears and she trembled with fear. This couldn’t be happening. ...“Jenna, is everything alright? I heard you puke.” She did not know how to respond, however, she slowly rose and drug her feet to the door. She put her right hand on the door knob, paused to take a deep breath while fighting back tears, and swung the door open. Jacob was standing there with a confused look on his face. His eyes studied her body language before they landed at the pregnancy test that was being clutched so tightly in her left hand. He slowly reached out, opened her hand, took the test, and read it. His eyes grew wide with fear. Jenna began to sob uncontrollably. There was no more holding the tears back.
I just recently finished "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak. I had no idea what this novel was going to be about going into it; all I knew was that our 10th grade English class study it. Right off the bat I noticed that our narrator was not your average Joe. The narrator is death. When I realized this I said to myself, "Oh this is going to be good." The novel is all about the Holocaust and it is shown from a German point of view. Leisel Meminger's mother gives her away to a foster German family. On the trip to this new family, Leisel's brother dies. So right from the start death is there. I'm not going to give you a synopsis of it, because I think you should read it for yourself. Just know that a German family hides a Jew in their basement for a while, and death is around every corner. That last line of the novel really got me though..."I am haunted by humans."
