Grits and Grace-Darci Stoll

Social studies teacher by day, and fitness instructor by night, Darci Stoll shares her insight to cooking. "I love to cook lots of different things for a lot of people. To me, the kitchen is a place where everyone can just hang out and visit."  Normally, Stoll does a friend get together during Christmas break; however, this year she did something a little different. "This year I chose to do something I call Friendsgiving. Thanksgiving break is usually not as busy as Christmas break is, so more people are able to get together." Stoll exclaims.  When asked what Friendsgiving consists of, Stoll stated, "Well, I love to have people over, especially friends. Friendsgiving allows for us educators to get together and talk. Everyone brings different kinds of food and we have a sort of potluck. My kitchen is open to my living room and my formal dining room, so no matter what room you are in, you are exposed to all different conversations while congregating around my kit...

Unanswered Prayers

"pray continually;" 1 Thessalonians 5:17  Do you ever feel like you're never going to win? The only answer is to pray. You have to talk to God and you can't ever stop. You have to pray for everyone and everything. When you pray, the closer to God you get, when you get closer to God, you get closer to church. Prayer does change things. He really does listen. Pray with people and for them. Pray without ceasing. Give thanks and honor to the God of Gods and the King of Kings. The Holy Spirit speaks for you if you don't know what to say. He will also speak through you. Let your joy come from God and Jesus. No one else. PRAISE HIM!

Light the Fire

"Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs-he wants to please his commanding officer." 2 Timothy 2:3-4  There are many unknowns in life, but we have to continue trusting in God. We have to fight for Hjm, for we are His soldier. There is a war going on between good and evil, and you have to be the best soldier you can be. We need to discipline ourselves to fight for our Great Captain. Our commanding officer. The sword is the bible, and we are the soldiers of Christ. Do what God has called to you to do. God is calling you to be dedicated. Use the bible to protect yourself. We have to teach the bible to fight this war. HE IS LORD! This revival is called "Light the Fire." You need to let your revival burn and you need to keep it lit. You have to be pumped up and ready. Be a witness, and you will be changed forevermore. You need to feel the Holy Spirit, because this is only the beginning. St...

West Side Story-The Movie

Wellllll....that ending was a disappointment. The whole point of Rome and Juliet is that they both die. Why didn't she die? I also found it extremely funny when Tony said, "I love you," and Maria responded with, "Yes. Hurry." Never once does she say it back. Now, I've taken about six Spanish classes and still can't speak it, but I'm pretty sure te adoro is not "I love you." So, according to my calculations, she did not love him. And she didn't die. What a bummer.

Grits and Grace-Chelsea Collins

Chelsea Collins, Angie Grant Elementary K-5 Math Coach, enjoys cooking almost as much as she enjoys math. “I love being able to throw things together and it work. Watching things come together is great. I always feel rewarded when something comes out better than planned,” Collins states. Collins finds recipes to be similar to math equations. Each part of the equation is vital to arriving at the correct answer. The same goes for a recipe. Each ingredient and its measurement is crucial for the end product. Too much of one thing, or too little, would cause you to arrive at the wrong outcome. “With cupcakes being my favorite thing to cook, I don’t limit myself there. I like to try new recipes. Anything new is always an adventure,” adds Collins. Having a toddler doesn’t stop Collins from preparing meals from both ends of the spectrum. “Adalynn eats almost anything, but we do have to adapt some things to her liking. She doesn’t like some vegetables, so sometimes we have to throw in a littl...

Romeo and Juliet play versus Luhrmann's movie

Okay, I'm like 100% sure this movie is NOT what Shakespeare wanted Romeo and Juliet portrayed as. The play is a hundred times better than this movie. My thing about this movie is that it's shot in "modern" day but they speak in Shakespeare time. The acting is horrible. I mean, a guy licked his nipple in public. Who does that? You know how there is a banned book list? Well they need to make a banned movie list and put this movie at the top of it. This is a disgrace to Shakespeare!!!!

Supernovae

Supernovae is plural for multiple supernova. A supernova is an explosion of a very large star. In other words, they are exploding stars. This happens at the final stages of a stars evolution. This explosion allows them to exist with about 10^20 times as much energy (What). There are no supernovae in the Milky Way, but only in other galaxies. One of the only supernova that has been seen in our galaxy was by Johannes Kepler in 1572 and 1604 (What). Even if there was supernovae in our galaxy, no one would likely see it with the naked eye. The materials that are blasted in supernovae are known as the supernovae remnants. These remnants can emit an x-ray light when a reverse shock acts on it (Supernova). This reverse shock wave is measured at 1000 times the speed of sound and it heats the remnant. The heat produced heats gases that causes it to fluoresce and emit an x-ray light. This process is very similar to lighting fluorescent light bulbs in a home. Tycho Brahe witnessed this in 1572 ...

Inside the Life of Rapunzel

Behind every Disney Princess movie there was a story that made them the princess they were. When people watched these movies they did not think much about the princess or her story, they just watched the movie for entertainment. Rapunzel, however, had one of the most amazing stories of them all. Like any other teenage girl, Rapunzel failed to see eye to eye with her mother. When an unforeseen adventure arose and Rapunzel disobeyed her mother’s orders, her life was never the same again. An analysis on Tangled’s main character Rapunzel, which was directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, will show how her mentality, needs, and wants changed over a short amount of time. As one matures their mentality changes. In the beginning of the movie Rapunzel developed a drive to experience the world. Throughout the movie she started to care less and less about what her mother thought and said. Movie critic Dan Kios mentioned this in his review. He said, “The films wittiest sequence cuts between Ra...

They’re Not Just Athletes

Many people see professional athletes as overpaid egomaniacs while others see them as role models and inspirations. Professional women soccer players, for example, are not just professional athletes. They are strong women who are role models for girls across the globe. Their stories are completely motivating, inspiring, and touching. The U.S. Women’s soccer team has been around for about a hundred years. It is one of the most successful women’s soccer nations in history (About). The players are not just inspirations to the girls in the United States but also to girls all across the world. In 2012 the team began and ended the year in the top spot in the FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) world cup rankings (About). They have also won the last three Olympic gold medals (About). Hope Solo, the team’s goalkeeper, once said, “Every kid who dreams of being a professional soccer player wants that world cup trophy, and I don’t have that yet. That has been in my head si...

Compare and Contrast

Comparing and contrasting subjects happens in everyday life and sometimes we don’t even realize it. You could be comparing your test grade with your friends. You could also be contrasting you and your friend. To compare something to something else is to state the similarities. Contrasting is the complete opposite. When you contrast two things you state all of the differences. You don’t necessarily have to compare and contrast the obvious things such as a mum and a rose are both flowers. Playing sports or working for a company or even being in the military are very similar things. However, texting and talking on the phone are not. Playing a sport or working for a company is very similar to being in the military. You must have dedication, drive, and commitment. It won’t always be easy and there are strict rules and policies that must be followed. Members of the team, company, or military also have to meet certain requirements. To be in the military, for example, you have to pass a phys...

Who should own a handgun or other weapon?

Who can own a handgun or automatic weapon? If your answer was “anyone” you are incorrect. Until just a few months ago anyone could own a gun. However, now a background check has to be run on the person interested in purchasing the weapon. In my opinion, there need to be more precautions taken as well as a background check. Do you think anyone should be able to own a weapon? Quite often we see on the news about school shootings. Mentally ill people are being taught how to shoot guns. Kids and teenagers can get their parents guns. Is there a way to stop that? We cannot entirely stop this but we can minimize it. Usually when we hear about a school shooting we find out that the shooter has some kind of mental disease. In my opinion, if there is a mentally unstable human being in the house then there should be no type of gun or other type of weapon. Look at the Sandy Hook shooting for example. His mother knew he was not mentally stable. She even took him to shooting ranges. She taught him ...

The Waste Land

April is the worse month. Out in the dead land Lilacs are breeding which mixes memory with desire and stirs dull roots with spring rain. Winter kept us warm by covering the Earth in snow. This allowed for the feeding of life with dried tubers. Summer was a big surprise. A rain shower came over Starnbergersee. We stopped and went on when the sun rose. Then we drank coffee and talked for an hour. When we were children we stayed at the archdukes. My cousins took me out on a sled. I was very scared. He said, “Marie, Marie. Hold on tight.” Then down the hill we went, into the mountains. You feel so free. What are the roots that clutch the trees? You can’t say or guess because you only know about broken images where the sun beats. The dead tree doesn’t give you any shelter. There is a shadow under this red rock. I will show you something different from your shadow at morning or your shadow in the evening. I will show you fear. Your arms were full and your hair was wet when we came back from ...

Culture, Politics, and Reality in “The Poor Clare”

“The Poor Clare”, a short story written by Elizabeth Glaskell, is filled with culture, politics, and reality. One of the main characters, Bridget Fitzgerald, is the poor clare in this story. She is just a lonely old caretaker who wishes to be reunited with her daughter. A poor clare is someone who lives in a convent. They are very religious people and most of the time they die from starvation. Bridget evolves from being a caretaker into being a poor clare. This could be because of her actions and the fact that she feels guilty for cursing her granddaughter. It does not matter how she became a poor clare. What is important is that she was segregated in society. Why did Glaskell fill this phenomenal story with culture, politics, and reality? The plot of “The Poor Clare” seems to portray society in a similar way to everyday life. Without this story, we wouldn’t fully understand the classes. There is so much more to this time period than the middle-class and it is imperative that we stu...

Among School Children

Among School Children William Butler Yeats 1 I walk through the long schoolroom questioning; A king of old nun in a white hood replies; The children learn to cipher and to sing, To study reading-books and history, To cut and sew, be neat in everything In the best modern way-the children’s eyes In momentary wonder stare upon A sixty-year-old smiling public man. 2 I dream of a Ledaean body, bent Above a sinking fire, a tale that she Told of a harsh reproof, or trivial even That changed some childish day to tragedy- Told, and it seemed that our two natures blent Into a sphere from youthful sympathy. Or else, to alter Plato’s parable, Into the yolk and white of the one shell. 3 And thinking of that fit of grief or rage I look upon one child or t’other there And wonder if she stood so at that age- For even daughters of the swan can share Something of every paddler’s heritage- And had that colour upon cheek or hair, And thereupon my heart is driven wild: She stands before me as a living chi...

English Literature

Introduction: There are many different ways to live life. We have all had some encounter with someone of a different social class than the one in which we live. I will be discussing two works where segregation of classes is addressed. Then, I will address the representation of Victorian literature, the causes and effects of segregation, and whether or not the authors were accurate. The Lady of Shalott: This is a poem by Lord Alfred Tennyson. “The Lady of Shalott” is about a young lady who is locked away in a tower. Low and behold, she is also cursed. One day she decides to leave her tower in hopes to find Sir Lancelot. On her journey to Camelot, she dies. What is the cause? Did she freeze to death? Did her curse kill her? There are so many unanswered questions, however, we do know that Lancelot and the Lady of Shalott were wealthier people. “All in the blue unclouded weather/ Thick-jeweled shone the saddle leather,/ The helmet and the helmet-feather/ Burned like one burning flame to...

Into the Life of Frederick Douglas

There once was a time when slavery existed in the United States. African Americans all over the country were being treated as if they were less than nothing, and it seemed like it would never end. During this time, there is one person who desires change more than anything. Frederick Douglass knew life was full of decisions between giving up and growing up, especially when it came to the desire of change in his life and the United States. Because of him, slavery no longer exists and lives were changed forever. Douglass knows that he either had to give up on gaining his freedom, or he hadsto grow up and decide how he was going to obtain it. Never has Douglass had it easy, not even as a child. Even his childhood is filled with unhappiness and sorrow, because slavery is all he has known. “A want of information concerning my own was a source of unhappiness to me even during childhood. The white children could tell their ages. I could not tell why I ought to be deprived of the same privile...

Thomas Jefferson and "The Declaration of Independence"

Every United States citizen is familiar with “The Declaration of Independence”. It is a very emotional and powerful document. Even though it appeals to emotions, it is a very logical piece of work. Thomas Jefferson balances the three appeals and uses a logical pattern of organization to his advantage in “The Declaration of Independence” by appealing to his audience and by revising his work. The revision he did was a key part in his use of a logical pattern of organization. Emotions are one of the three appeals. Jefferson used emotional appeal in “The Declaration of Independence” by making sure this document would affect his audience: the people of the United States. Jefferson wrote, “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal;”(663). All throughout history there has been controversy about all men being equal. This is a very emotional topic because not everyone believed in that during this time period. That statement is also ethical and will also be addres...

Shakespeare in Love

This was my first time watching Shakespeare in Love, and I absolutely loved it. I found it interesting that Marlowe gave Shakespeare the idea for Romeo and Juliet. That just goes to show that writers talk to other writers. I was really wanting Will and Viola to get married, but then I remembered that this movie was about Romeo and Juliet so of course that couldn't happen. This was a movie about star-crossed lovers acting in a play about star-crossed lovers. That's Shakespeare for you. I didn't know that being a woman on stage was that big of a deal. Tilney was ready to arrest everyone. That's gender roles. Women weren't entitled to things in those days, not even love in a marriage. Speaking of marriage, I wanted to know where Anne Hathaway was. Will was definitely stepping out on her, and honestly, if my husband was in another town I would want to be with him. If they said where she was, I missed it.

The New Woman

Dracula, by Bram Stoker, is a classic novel that focuses on many political points, one being the New Woman. This topic was very controversial in the nineteenth century and there is also controversy on what woman in the novel was in fact the New Woman. The New Woman emerged towards to end of the nineteenth century. These women tended to be more promiscuous than the traditional Victorian women. Many critics and commentators believe that Mina Harker is the traditional woman and Lucy Westenra is the New Woman, but some think otherwise. In class, our discussions were centered around Lucy being the New Woman and Mina being the traditional woman, which is what I agree with. With the information that I have found, I intend to argue for Lucy being the New Woman and for Mina progressing into the New Woman as the novel progresses. The first half of the novel is about Lucy fighting off Dracula. The second half of the novel begins when Lucy dies and Mina becomes the new focal point. Mina tends to ...
